Recycling Old Windows the Right Way: How South Yorkshire Windows Handles Your Old Frames

At South Yorkshire Windows, replacing your windows doesn’t stop with fitting the new ones. We make sure the old ones don’t go to waste. Every frame we remove is carefully dismantled, sorted, and recycled so that valuable materials can be reused instead of ending up in landfill. It’s part of our promise—to do things the right way, for our customers and for the planet.

Many people never consider what happens to their old windows once they’re taken out. They’re gone, replaced, and forgotten. But for us, that’s only half the job.

True responsibility lies in what happens next—turning waste into something useful. Our recycling process ensures your old windows contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future for the South Yorkshire area.

What Really Happens to Your Old Windows

When we remove your old frames from your South Yorkshire home, they don’t simply get loaded onto a truck bound for the nearest landfill. Each window undergoes a meticulous sorting process, with every component separated and processed according to its material type—piece by piece.

uPVC: The Foundation of Most Modern Frames

The majority of window frames replaced today are uPVC – a durable plastic material that’s been the standard for decades. When we remove these frames, they’re cleaned thoroughly and separated for recycling into an array of useful products.

Here’s what might surprise you: we don’t recycle old uPVC back into new window frames. Why? Because recycled uPVC isn’t pure or consistent enough in colour or strength to meet our exacting standards. We’d never compromise on quality, and we won’t pretend that recycled uPVC is suitable for new window manufacturing when it simply isn’t.

Instead, your old uPVC frames are repurposed into rainwater goods—guttering, drainpipes and the like—where the slight variations in colour and consistency don’t compromise performance. This honest approach to recycling is exactly why we’ve built a reputation for integrity in South Yorkshire. We tell our customers the truth about what can and can’t be done, and we act accordingly.

Metals: High-Value Components Worth Recovering

Every window frame contains various metal components: handles, hinges, locks, and most significantly, the spacer bars that sit between double-glazed panes. These metals are carefully separated during the recycling process and sold by weight to metal recycling specialists.

Aluminium deserves particular mention here. Commonly found in those spacer bars, aluminium is genuinely valuable in the recycling market. It’s lightweight, endlessly reusable without losing quality, and in high demand across numerous industries.

Unlike some materials that degrade with each recycling cycle, aluminium maintains its properties indefinitely. This makes it a genuinely worthwhile component of the entire window recycling process and one that provides real environmental benefits.

When we remove your windows, you’re not just getting new frames—you’re also providing valuable raw material that will be used again and again, maintaining its properties with every cycle.

Glass: Where the Real Value Lies

Old plate window glass represents the crown jewel of window recycling—and for reasons that might surprise you.

When old glass arrives at recycling facilities, it’s processed alongside the raw materials used to manufacture entirely new glass. Here’s where it gets genuinely clever: recycled glass serves two critical functions in the manufacturing process.

Firstly, it bulks up the sand mix. The primary ingredient in glass is sand, and recycled glass effectively stretches that sand further. By adding recycled glass to the mixture, manufacturers need less virgin sand to create the same volume of new glass. This reduces the environmental impact of mining new sand and cuts material costs.

Secondly—and this is the real kicker—recycled glass acts as an accelerant. It reduces the melting temperature required to manufacture new glass dramatically. Pure sand needs to be heated to approximately 1,700°C to melt properly.

Add recycled glass to the mix, and that temperature drops to around 1,400°C. That 300-degree reduction might not sound enormous, but in industrial manufacturing at scale, it’s transformative.

Lower melting temperatures mean dramatically less fuel is required to run the furnaces. Less fuel consumption means lower manufacturing costs and, crucially, significantly reduced carbon emissions.

It’s energy-efficient at scale, and it’s why recycled glass is so highly prized by glass manufacturers. Your old windows aren’t just being disposed of—they’re actively making the manufacturing process more efficient and less damaging to the environment.

What’s in It for You: Fair Value Returned

Here’s something we need to be completely transparent about: we don’t make money from recycling. We make our living from fitting new, high-quality windows. Recycling is simply the right way to handle old materials.

That said, the value generated from your old window materials rightfully belongs to you—because they are your windows. It wouldn’t be fair for us to benefit from that value whilst you received nothing.

That’s why we credit the recycled materials value directly against your replacement order. If you’re having existing windows replaced, the scrap value of the aluminium, metals and glass is calculated and deducted from your final invoice, effectively reducing the price you pay for your new installation. It’s a straightforward system that rewards you for choosing to do the right thing environmentally and ensures you share in the fair value of those materials.

Of course, this system only applies to customers replacing existing windows. If you’re building a new home from scratch, there’s nothing for us to recycle – but you’ll still receive the same honest pricing and quality installation that’s made us the trusted choice for windows across South Yorkshire.

The Philosophy Behind Proper Window Recycling

For us, recycling isn’t a marketing gimmick or a greenwashing exercise. It’s simply the right way to do things. We’ve been fitting windows across South Yorkshire for years, and in that time we’ve developed a philosophy: honest work, fair value, and genuine care for the environment. These three principles guide everything we do, from the initial survey through to the final disposal of your old frames.

When you choose South Yorkshire Windows, you’re not just getting quality double glazing. You’re working with a company that believes window replacement should be done properly—with respect for the materials involved, respect for your investment, and respect for the planet we all share.

No nonsense. No shortcuts. No greenwashing. Just properly done windows, recycled responsibly, installed with care.
